Website Search Engine Marketing in a Google Dominated Pool

That Google dominates web searches is nothing new. They have been dominating web searches for a long time now. The question that is increasingly asked is, “If Google is the biggest, why don’t we just stick to Google for our website marketing campaign?” If we look at the following quote from Web Pro News, it is understandable why people are asking such questions.

Market share for Google search virtually reached 66 percent for the month of December 2007, while the next three major search sites gave back a little bit.
By the latest Hitwise numbers, once again, Google tops search market share in the United States. They picked up 65.98 percent, outdistancing the field.

Google is not only beating their competition, they are massacring it. Still, it is best not to forget that while the other three top search engines: Yahoo, MSN and Ask add up to most of the remaining percentage points, there are still good reasons for spreading your website search engine marketing budget around. Wherever you spend your money you are going to get an amount of hits that is equal to your budget. Whether your ad campaign is with Ask or Google, you will get what you pay for.

Competition keeps everyone honest. Ask yourself this question, “Are people that search through Ask less likely to buy my products than people that search through Google?” The answer is of course, “Absolutely not.” Don’t base your website search engine marketing campaign on the site that has the biggest chunk of the market, base it on the provider that gives you the best prices. If that is Google, go with Google, but you are likely to find that the others provide some pretty stiff competition.
